Conference Call (6/03/04)
In attendance: Bill DuPaul, Jay Rasmussen, Jim Falk, and Jim Hurley
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Bill DuPaul at 1 p.m. (EDT)
The group welcomed our new EXCOMM member Jim Hurley (WI) who won the special At-Large position election in a very close vote. Jim will complete the remainder of the 2-year term vacated by J. Lemus. His term will expire in December 2005.
The executive committee discussed the upcoming brown bag seminar to be held June 15-16 in Silver Spring, MD (NOAA library). The seminar will focus on Rip Current Education, Awareness and Forecasting. Dr. Wendy Carey with Delaware Sea Grant has been instrumental in working on this issue with NOAA, National Weather Service Forecasters and NSGO and will be the "headliner" for the BBB. In addition to the library seminar, a number of separate meetings are being scheduled with staff in other NOAA offices (NOS, OCRM, etc.). Once this seminar is completed and reviewed, we will be soliciting ideas from the Assembly for future topics. Suggested topics will be reviewed by the EXCOMM and final decisions on future BBB seminars will be made by the executive committee.
The fall SGA meeting will be held on October 10-11, 2004 in Newport, RI. B. DuPaul will be in attendance representing the Assembly. In addition, J. Rasmussen and J. Hurley noted they would be attending also. This should allow us to have better coverage at some of the SGA subcommittee meetings. The two major committees are the Program Mission Committee (PMC) which B. DuPaul covers, and the External Relations Committee (ERC) where we have not had coverage before, but we might ask if our past-chair can sit in on this meeting and observe the discussion.
As was discussed at our business meeting in Jekyll Island, B. DuPaul has suggested that we hold at least one in-person planning meeting of the EXCOMM annually. He noted that a few years ago when he previously served on the EXCOMM the group would arrange these 1-2 day meetings for program planning purposes. He felt they were very effective. The group is focusing on two time-frames (21-30 July) and (11-18 August) for this meeting. Suggested locations included: Chicago, IL or New Orleans, LA since they are central locations and possibly cheap air fares can be found for all members of the committee. A final decision will be made in late June or early July. Some possible agenda items were discussed at our Jekyll Island meeting including:
The EXCOMM discussed the meeting in Jekyll Island and all thought it was a very good meeting. Accolades rang out for the tremendous job K. Gates did in all the planning and arrangements that he made to make the meeting such a success. Thanks again, Keith for a Job well-done
With no further business the conference call was adjourned at 1:35 p.m. (EDT).
If you have any issues you would like the executive committee to discuss or explore, on your behalf, contact any member of the committee (See e-mail addresses and phone numbers below).
