Oregon Sea Grant

Oregon Sea Grant and the Oregon Parks & Recreation Department have joined resources to create a free iPhone application that guides visitors through the Beaver Creek State Natural Area, Oregon's newest state park. The app features an interactive map of the scenic Beaver Creek Water Trail - an easy-paddling, three-mile waterway open to kayaks and canoes.

An estimated 50 percent of the Dungeness crabs caught by recreational crabbers have soft shells. Their soft shells contain a small amount of watery meat that is hardly worth the trouble of cleaning and cooking. In fact, many people end up tossing the poor quality crab meat into the garbage can.

Understanding Tides describes the creation of tides, the roles of the moon and the sun in producing tides, the effects of elliptical orbits, the interactions among astronomical movements, and types of tides. The author, a high school teacher, also looks at phenomena such as seiches and tidal currents that are associated with tides.
