Program - OSG Summer Scholars
Assignment - As a 2017 Summer Scholar, Julia will be working in the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (SSNERR) near Charleston, OR. She will be monitoring invasive green crab abundance and researching fish assemblages to characterize the impacts of crabs on native species and assess long-term trends in habitat use by fish. This research will help inform management efforts in the estuary.
Education - Julia graduated in May, 2017 from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, where she double majored in Biology and Environmental Studies. As part of her studies, Julia also studied ecology and conservation biology with the Organization for Tropical Studies in South Africa.
Professional and research interests - Julia is interested in a wide range of environmental issues, in particular anthropogenic impacts on community ecology and applying ecological research to conservation goals. She plans to pursue a PhD in conservation biology and aspires to work in public service to help protect natural systems.
