Program - OSG Summer Scholars
Assignment - As a 2017 Summer Scholar, Katie will be working for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) in their Shellfish and Estuarine Assessment of Coastal Oregon branch (SEACOR) based at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) in Charleston, OR. She will be mapping eelgrass distribution and conducting population assessments of estuarine bivalve populations in Coos Bay, which will be used to inform management of local recreational and commercial fisheries.
Education - Katie is a recent graduate of Stony Brook University where she received a B.S. in Marine Science and was employed in the Nano-Raman Molecular Imaging Laboratory (NARMIL) working on marine molecular microbiology research.
Professional and research interests - Katie hopes to further her education by eventually pursuing a master's degree in her field, with a focus on plankton trophodynamics and biological oceanography. Along with experience in laboratory research, Katie has tremendous interest in science communication and public outreach, and hopes to use the Summer Scholars program as a way to engage the local community.
