WHEREASE: Since September 1971, Oregon Sea Grant has been a dynamic partnership among the Oregon University System, the State of Oregon, Oregon coastal communities, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; and
WHEREAS: Oregon Sea Grant funds top-quality research with high relevance to society as part of an integrated program of research, education, Extension and public science communication that helps Oregonians understand, conserve, and wisely use ocean and coastal resources; and
WHEREAS: Oregon Sea Grant leads the public education and free-choice learning programs at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport that have engaged more than 11 million visitors and hundreds of thousands of Oregon school children over the past 40 years; and
WHEREAS: Oregon Sea Grant, based at Oregon State University, provides a substantial economic benefit to Oregonians, including an estimated $75 million during the last year alone.
NOW, THEREFORE: I, John A. Kitzhaber, M.D. Governor of the State of Oregon, hereby proclaim September 17, 2011, to be
OREGON SEA GRANT DAY
in Oregon and encourage all Oregonians to join in this observance
