Oregon Sea Grant

Chief Scientist on more 80 research cruises, with more than 700 days spent at sea all over the world, Dr. Brandt  continues to be actively involved in marine research; he is among a three-state team of scientists who won a National Science Foundation rapid response grant to investigate the effects of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill on sea life in the Gulf of Mexico.

His research interests include:

• Ecology, management and ecosystem forecasting of marine and freshwater ecosystems, including
  • Bioenergetics, trophic relationships, physical-biological interactions, and predator-prey interactions among fishes;
  • The ecology of thermal fronts;
  • Spatial modeling of fish growth and production;
  • Development and application of underwater acoustics for studies on patchiness, stock abundance and community size structure in pelagic ecosystems and
  • Coastal ocean observing systems.

Dr. Brandt serves as chair of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee to the Oregon governor's Ocean Policy Advisory Council, and chair of the OSU Marine Council.
