Biofouling, Aquatic Invasive Species, and Commercial Fishing Vessels: Be Part of the Solution!

Biofouling refers to organisms attached to or associated with underwater or wetted surfaces of a vessel. Fishing equipment, the hull of a boat, and other boat structures such as propellers, rudders, and intakes can accumulate biofouling.

This seafood guide is an annual reference created by Oregon Sea Grant Extension Fisheries Specialists. The guide helps consumers identify what seasonally fresh seafood will be available along the north and central coast of Oregon throughout the year. This issue is for 2020. This brochure and insert were created by Oregon Sea Grant Extension to promote a whale sighting app. This effort is part of a larger Whale Entanglement Group outreach project. This app allows citizen scientists to share their whale sightings along the Oregon coast with whale researchers who are trying to gain a better understand of when and where whales are along the coast.

This directive is recommended by the Oregon Whale Entanglement Working Group. The National Marine Fisheries Service has confirmed a significant increase in large whale entanglements starting in 2014, and specifically in Dungeness crab fishing gear. This situation threatens the stability of the fishery and coastal fishing communities. By using these voluntary best practices, the Oregon Dungeness crab fleet can take an important step towards reducing the risk of whale entanglements.

This guide is a quick reference for consumers on what is being caught fresh, locally by commercial fishermen and during what seasons.
