The decline of Pacific salmon has had its full share of controversy and conflict. Certainly one of the most controversial incidents in recent years was the die-off of an estimated 34,000 fish in the Klamath River in September 2002.

When a family member is either the owner of a fishing boat or a member of a crew, there is always the risk of injury or death, or the loss of the vessel at sea. This publication is intended to help you gather information about your family and the vessel. In case of an emergency this information will help family members deal with post-casualty demands.

The intent of this publication is to consider basic principles related to money, and to suggest ways to teach your children important lessons so necessary throughout their lives.

When fishing families confront economic, personal, and social stresses, it can be a scary and painful time for all family members. In American culture, asking for help isn’t easy. Most fishing families are hardworking, independent, and proud. These qualities can be useful, but they can also make it more difficult for a person to ask for help.

Over the course of a year, our research team conducted a series of focus groups with women who are married to commercial fishermen. From the material we have amassed, common themes emerged concerning how marriages to fishermen change over time.
