Research cruises introduce teens to marine-related STEM careers

To keep pace with the workforce demands of the 21st century, there’s a growing need to provide students with immersive STEM experiences, including in marine science. To meet this need, since 2016 Oregon Sea Grant has been organizing and sponsoring cruises in which high schoolers, community college students and their teachers get a taste of what it’s like to conduct research at sea. The goal is to inspire the students to pursue marine-related careers involving science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

2021-22 Oregon Marine Scientist & Educator Alliance

Apply to Join the 2021-22 ORSEA Cohort!

The Oregon Marine Scientist and Educator Alliance (ORSEA) program brings together scientists (graduate students, post docs, research assistants and professors) and middle/high school math and science teachers to create integrated lessons focused on marine-related anchoring phenomena. In addition to co-created curriculum that will help meet outreach goals, participating researchers will also receive training in communicating science.
