The Shellephone

Hear the ocean like you never have before!

You’ve probably heard that if you hold a conch shell to your ear, you can hear the ocean. But what if the ocean could hear you back?

The Shellephone, lets you speak into a conch shell and hear your voice transformed into marine animals.

Talk to your friend in California sea lion. Sing “Baby Beluga” as an actual beluga whale.

Created by Hatfield's Artist-in-Residence, Dr. Chet Udell of Biological & Ecological Engineering at Oregon State University, this playful installation invites you to explore how animals connect through sound. Each shell contains a microphone, speaker, and touchscreen that lets you choose which animal voice your conversation becomes.

Come try it out!
