Distinguishing Characteristics:

  • Large, black eyes
  • A stout body that tapers at both ends
  • Relatively short snout
  • Large, triangular, serrated teeth
  • Color grayish or brownish above and dirty white below

Habitat: Mainly nearshore areas, including enclosed bays and estuaries, but can be found in the open ocean; roams from the surface to as deep as 4,100 feet

Size: Up to about 21 feet
Note: In spite of its size, the great white shark frequently swims into shallow waters and even into the surf.
